Stuart Farquhar believes he is capable of reaching the heights of two years ago again.

New Zealand's leading javelin thrower will line up at the national athletics championships in Wellington this weekend after a slow start to the year.

He threw a personal best in 2012 of 86.31 metres, but was five metres off that for his top mark of 2013.

But, he says he is feeling good about what 2014 holds.

"Everything's indicating of being in that shape or even better at the moment. My training's been really good, my strength levels, my speed, all my niggles are starting to get under control.

"It's promising, it's feeling good and I know there's a lit more distance in me."

It's been a sluggish start to Commonwealth Games year for Farquhar.

He says while he's physically feeling well, he hasn't been throwing the distances he would like so far in competition.

"To me it's been a bit of a slow start in terms of distances thrown. But everything's going on track and I'm training pretty well, and the body's feeling pretty good.

"Just really looking forward to getting into the grind of the season."

Farquhar says his slow start can be fixed at the national champs this weekend.

"I've only been up sort of mid to late 70 metres at the moment. My technique hasn't been the best in competition but my body's in shape to really throw it well over 80. It'll come and hopefully it'll start in Wellington."

Farquhar chases his 14th national title in his competition on Saturday.

He will also compete at the Australian nationals next weekend.
