German javelin thrower Christina Obergföll underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in February, but the 2010 European Athletics Championships javelin silver medalist is optimistic that she will be back over 70 metres again this summer.

Her German and former European record stands at 70.20m, which the 29-year-old threw at the former European Cup in 2007, and she is currently third on the continental all-time list.

“I’ve lost two weeks of training but because the World Championships is later this summer, I’m not worried,” said Obergföll.

Obergföll won silver medals at the 2005 and 2007 World Championships and wants to get back on the podium again in Daegu, South Korea, this summer after the disappointment of missing out in front of her family and friends at the last World Championships in Berlin two years ago, when she finished fifth.

She flew off on Monday to spend three weeks in San Diego at the Olympic training center there.

“I had to cancel my planned training camp in Portugal last month because of the knee problem but I am now more motivated to really work hard in the United States and really get my season off to a flying start even if my first competition will be later than expected,” she added.
