While Britain’s world medallists were in action in Götzis and Hengelo, many of the country’s leading athletes were competing at various domestic and international competitions on another busy weekend of action.

Olympic fourth-placer Goldie Sayers produced one of the highlights on the first day of the CAU Inter-Counties Championships in Bedford, throwing her best ever season opener of 61.61m to win the javelin. What made the performance all the more impressive was the fact that Sayers underwent surgery just eight weeks ago.

In a high-quality competition – by British standards – five women broke 50 metres, with Laura Whittingham finishing second with 57.08m, while Freya Jones broke Sayers’ UK age-17 best with a throw of 52.82m in third.
