Latvia’s 2004 Olympic Games javelin silver medalist Vadims Vasilevskis launched his spear out to a 2011 world-leading 88.22m at the BIG BANK Kuldliiga meeting in Tartu, Estonia, on Saturday.

It was almost three meters better than the previous world lead of 85.33m which was in the name of both Russia’s Sergey Makarov and Finland’s Tero Pitkämäki.

Since his place on the podium in Athens, Vasilevskis has had a series of fourth places at major championships including the 2006 European Athletics Championships, and both the 2007 and 2009 World Championships but he is hoping to get back among the medals at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, this summer.

Russia’s 19-year-old Dmitriy Tarabin finished second with a personal best 82.61m while Latvia’s world junior record holder Zigismunds Sirmais was third with 80.59m, his first competition since he threw 84.47m at the European Cup Winter Throwing in Sofia nine weeks ago.
