SCARBOROUGH athlete Kim Mickle has won early nomination for Australia’s 2012 London Olympics team.
After finishing sixth in a
high-quality field at the World Championships in September, Mickle was
one of seven Australians recommended for Olympic selection.
Subject to fitness, the 27-year-old will realise her dream when she throws for Australia in London.
The
only West Australian to receive early nomination, Mickle claimed her
sixth place at the World Championships with a broken rib and torn
oblique.
“Unfortunately in my first throw of qualifying I did my back,” she said.
“I couldn’t get my hip around the next day, so I used a bowling-type style, which kept crunching my ribs.
“It
worked, but on my fourth throw I knew I’d broken my rib and it turns
out I’d torn my oblique too. I was in a lot of pain but my fifth and
sixth throws were actually my best.”
Mickle said early nomination would be a huge help in the lead-up to London.
“I’ve always had to chase qualifiers and chase selection, so it’s definitely a different position to be in,” she said.
“Now that I can bypass the whole domestic season, I can really focus on getting fit and preparing for the Olympics."
