Erik Lundqvist was a sign painter by profession. He became the youngest Olympics gold medal winner in the javelin when he won in Amsterdam at 20 years, 1 month, and 3 days with a throw of 66.60 meters (218’ 6”)

Two weeks later, back in Stockholm, he confirmed his status as a champion by becoming the first man to exceed the 70-meter barrier when he threw 71.01 meters (232’ 11”). He only improved on this once, eight years later, when he threw 71.16 meters in 1936.
